It does, but the good news is that the day you file is the day the USPTO starts to lock in your rights pending completion of your registration.
The USPTO has a timeline on their site of the process. After your application is submitted, its a 4.5 month wait for the application to be assigned to one of their attorneys'; followed by another 10 months for them to review your application and share any objections/rejections. Gov fees are currently $350 for registration of 1 class of goods or services.

Additional fees apply for adding more than 1 class/category of goods or services to an application.

After you receive your registration, you’ll then be the owner of an exclusive monopoly to use your trademark name in the class you filed in!
You can own this exclusive right potentially indefinitely so long as it continues to remain in use and you timely make renewals.
After your registration completes our office will share a closing consult to inform you on when you need to renew.
